When A Woman’s Fed Up: The Sara Kruzan Story

Tara Sep. 23.2009 8:35am
<br />

“No one can do everything, but everyone can do something”… I’m sure many of you have heard that saying before, and it couldn’t have rung truer and be more fitting than in the case of Sara Kruzan. Sara is a young woman, who had her life turned upside down when she was sentenced to life without parole at the age of 16 for murdering a man. Murder is wrong, and all murderers should be punished, but I am writing this because after hearing of Sara’s story several weeks ago, I feel she should be appealed.

Sara Kruzan, like many of us, is the product of a broken home, with no parents to shower her with attention or love (her mother was a addicted to drugs). At age 11, Sara met “G.G.”, a 31 year old man, who became a father figure in the life of her and her friends, taking them to the roller skating rink, movies, etc. He told her that she was “so special” that she should never give away sex for free, then groomed her for 2 years to be a prostitute and then raped her. At 13, she became a human trafficking victim, and worked from 6pm-6am to make money for her father figure turned pimp, until one day she snapped and killed “G.G.”

For his murder, at the tender age of 16, she received life without parole… PLUS 4 years. To be punished for never being protected, I can’t imagine what that’s like. We have all endured some level of suffering, some worst than others. And I’m not saying murder is okay, or the right way to get out of a bad situation, but sometimes it’s the only way out, as was the case with Sara Kruzan.
PICTURE THIS: Imagine your childhood taken away from you, your innocence recklessly snatched away, every night being violated by strangers, and raped over and over and over and over again by someone you looked up to, feeling trapped like you had no where to go, and literally had no one to turn to except the one who has hurt you. WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Because you can’t just run away. That was the case with this young girl.

You can watch the video of Sara Kruzan telling her story here:

I just ask that those of you who are reading this to open your minds and hearts, and join me in this fight for Sara Kruzan. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. WRITE a letter to the California state Governor, or President Obama; make them aware of the situation. ASK for help and mercy on behalf of Sara, so she can be acquitted and enjoy life as she would have known it. If enough of us get together, and write enough letters, to free Sara Kruzan, they will listen to us. If enough of us gather, and march on behalf of Sara Kruzan, they will see us. It costs a little over $1 to do this: an envelope=.25, a stamp=.50, a sheet of paper=$1/notebook, your voice=priceless. You can learn more about Sara and the National Center for Youth Law here.

I was so saddened when I read this article. I can’t believe how the justice system failed Sarah. I myself lost my sister to murder by the hands of her boyfriend, so I understand how the family of the victim feels, but at the same time Sara was so young and made a huge and unfortunate mistake. My heart really goes out to her and I want to do all I can to help her.

I read and watched the story about sarah..i dont know but am sure she did more than “kill” this man. Perhaps he was stabbed him 300 times or maybe his dick was cut off and shoved down his throat…before everyone sides with her sentence being wrong LETS find out the facts.

No matter the facts this young woman was doomed before she even got started. Her mother was on drugs, and she encountered a man that pretended to protect her. The devil came in slowly to destroy her life. I don’t care how she did it, what matters is she does not deserve the sentence she has received. Until we are able to put ourselves in other people’s shoes in these situations no of us will understand the hurt, pain, or feelings of what this child went through. I am interested in writing her and finding out more information about her as well. How can I help?

You know, after watching this, I wondered if Jaycee Dugard would have been locked up if she had killed her kidnapper/rapist. I doubt it. She would’ve been called a hero. I know Sarah wasn’t locked away for almost 20 years and had kids with her pimp, but she was still succumbed to abusive treatment from an adult.

I feel for her, I do. She should not have had to endure all of this pain and suffering at such a young age.

If she were to be released, where would she go? What would she do? Who is going to take care of her? Our system does not take care of the children that need it…if it did, she would not have had this happen to her.

People always say they are going to help…they are going to change things…but they never do. Look at our President…what has he done for societies children? They are who need the help!

Her time is over bit excessive. Yes.. She should do SOME time in prison, but not life in prison. This happen when she was 16yrs old. This poor young girl experience abuse and rape. As woman, that is Pain and Shame. No one experience her life style… we cannot sit back and just judge, tried to picture self.. Your daughter ….Pls keep in mind she is on the streets since she was 13yrs… no stable parents (home) in her life. I would love to write a letter to her.. My heart goes out to her.

No-one seems to know how sarah killed G.G? ? If this was in a brutal or premeditated manor?
I feel for this young lady as no-one should have to suffer what she suffered at a very young age! I also agree that she should be considered for parole as she is an extremely bright and intelligent young lady. I have seen many comments on this case on facebook and youtube stating that this is a “colour” thing, I dont beleive this as there are young white children facing the same stiff sentence as Sarah, this sickens me almost as much as the story itself! ! ! That coloured people use this oppertunity to cry racism, I mean come on you have a BLACK president. Sarah done what she had to do, she also had to be punished for taking another human being’s life (if you consider GG as a human being) but I do not agree that this is a race thing.

Wow…what a sad story, but I think mercy is what needs to happen here, not only after she gets out, but she will need support, resources, education, training, both emotionally, mentally, as well as income empowerment….

I cant believe that this girl is really in prison! Like, seriously she’s in prison for what? Her life was taken from her. She was 11 years old. What is wrong with the judge that sentenced her? That should be a crime! They shouldn’t have arrested her at all. For what? That was self-defense if nothing else. I really cant believe this is happening. So sad, but true. I will write a letter every month, until somebody does something. I dont make sense.

i have just watched this video, posted to me by a friend. OMG … what are these people thinking? how could they possibly justify taking this young girls life away? Yes she committed a crime, but there are mitigating circumstances which were obviously not taken into accout. the judge who sentenced her … would he have done the same to his daughter? or any other child he knew? … i don’t think so. this is wrong on so many levels. GIVE HER BACK HER FREEDOM… she deserves a second chance. Keeping her locked up is not helping her. How can she begin to prove her worth if she is locked up for the rest of her life

THIS IS A VERY SAD AND TRUE STORY. THIS YOUNG LADY DO NOT DESERVE LIFE IN JAIL. THAT’S NOT GOING TO PROVE ANYTHING TO NO ONE. SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAROLE AFTER ALTTLE WHILE IN JAIL FOR KILLING SOMEONE, WHICH NO ONE CAN GO AROUND AND DO FREELY. BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THAT CHILD’S SITUATION. HER LIFE WAS JUST TAKEN FROM HER.

Here is a story I found about this:

Viral video ignites interest in former Riverside girl’s life sentence (Riverside Press-Enterprise)
    Thursday, October 29, 2009
    By PAUL LAROCCO
    The Press-Enterprise

More than 15 years ago, a slight 16-year-old girl killed her former pimp inside a Riverside motel room, shooting him in the neck with a pistol when he turned his back. She took $1,500 from his pocket and the keys to his Jaguar.

Within 14 months, Sara Kruzan was tried and convicted as an adult of first-degree murder, with special circumstances of lying in wait and murder in the course of robbery. Prosecutors said a rival pimp put her up to the crime.

She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, despite a California Youth Authority report stating the runaway would benefit from rehabilitation.

“What is so striking about this is the absence of moral scruple,” Riverside County Superior Court Judge J. Thompson Hanks said as he sentenced a tearful Kruzan on Sept. 28, 1995.

The case received little attention then.

In 2006, an advocacy group’s videotaped interview with the young woman — produced to seek a change in juvenile sentencing laws — also made few ripples.

But in August, a friend who met the now 31-year-old Kruzan at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla started spreading the old Human Rights Watch video in which Kruzan details a childhood of abuse and sexual exploitation.

And on Sept. 21, actress Demi Moore used her Twitter account to link to the same video.

“She was a child. Unprotected,” Moore wrote on her ‘mrskutcher’ account. “I think she deserves a 2nd chance. Do you?”

With that, Kruzan’s video suddenly went viral — picked up by blogs, spurring Facebook groups and reviving online petitions to elected officials calling for a new sentence. Pro-bono lawyers took interest and a movie producer even asked to make a film about her life.

“My idea was to make Sara the face of juveniles being sentenced without parole, and it’s really taken off,” said Kim Deanne, a 31-year-old North Hollywood resident who became close with Kruzan in 2005 after being sent to Chowchilla on a fraud conviction.

The case has been on the mind of state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, since early 2007, when he posted the video on his YouTube account as he attempted to change California’s youth-sentencing law.

“I welcome the support of Demi Moore and I welcome the support of anyone to help move this issue forward,” Yee said. “What continues to drive me is cases like Sara’s.”

Senate Bill 399, a revised version of Yee’s 2007 proposal, would allow a court to review juvenile life-without-parole cases after 10 years. If rehabilitation is deemed an option, the only new sentence that could be given would be life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.

But the bill stalled in the Assembly’s public safety committee, leaving Yee to wait until the next Senate session to revise it again.

A large contingent of law-enforcement groups continue to oppose it, including the California District Attorneys Association. Even in life-without-parole cases, they noted that a judge still has the discretion to impose 25 years to life.

“Existing law properly recognizes the fact that there are juveniles who commit special circumstances murder and that LWOP is an appropriate sentence in many, if not most, of these cases,” the association wrote.

    ABUSED AS CHILD

In the Human Rights Watch’s introduction to Kruzan’s interview, it is noted that more than 200 California minors are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.

“That means I’m gonna die here,” Kruzan calmly tells the camera, nodding her head in front of a stark concrete wall. “I definitely know I deserve punishment. I mean, you don’t just take somebody’s life and think that it’s OK.”

Kruzan grew up in Riverside and Moreno Valley, and has said she had an abusive, drug-addicted mother and did not know her father.

The video flashes an innocent childhood snapshot before she talks about being raped at 13 and groomed for prostitution by her eventual victim, George Gilbert “G.G.” Howard.

Before she met him, Kruzan said, she made her school’s honor roll.

“G.G. would start to take me or my little friends roller skating or to the mall or stuff,” she told the interviewers in 2006. “He was like a father figure.”

The video, scored dramatically and cut frequently, implies that Kruzan killed Howard out of a need to protect herself or impulse after years of abuse and prostitution.

    ‘NO INHIBITION’

But prosecutors argued at trial that Howard no longer employed Kruzan at the time of the killing, and that a week earlier, she had moved into the Rubidoux home of one of Howard’s rivals — a drug dealer who put her up to robbing and shooting him.

On March 10, 1994, Kruzan agreed to go to the movies with the 36-year-old Howard and spend the night with him at the Dynasty Suites motel on Iowa Avenue. She packed a pistol.

“She seduced and she killed,” prosecutor Timothy Freer, now a Riverside Superior Court judge, told jurors.

Kruzan confessed to the slaying upon her arrest, four days after a maid found her purse left behind at the motel. But it was only when she testified at trial that she stated Howard’s rival had threatened her life if she didn’t shoot him, prosecutors said.

The district attorney’s office offered a plea deal that offered Kruzan possible parole but she refused, officials said then. Her defense attorney, David Gunn, also now a judge in Riverside, asked Hanks to consider a lesser sentence, citing her upbringing and life under a pimp.

It didn’t appear that anyone else, including any relatives, spoke in Kruzan’s support at her 1995 sentencing.

In imposing the maximum sentence recommend by the jury, the now-retired Hanks then said she showed “no inhibition with regard to her conduct when a pimp asked her to kill another pimp.”

Reflecting on the judge’s words, Kruzan, in the 2006 video, said she had to look up “moral” and “scruple” in the dictionary once she got to prison.

“I found the ability to believe in myself, and that I have a lot of good to offer now,” she said. “I believe I can set a positive example.”

    WEB FRENZY

Thousands of people have viewed the video since Demi Moore linked to it last month. Blogs and media outlets have even picked up on the prison interview as if it were new.

“Honestly, there’s so many different videos circulating,” Deanne said of the Web sites and advocacy outlets that have posted and re-posted it. “Everything is picking up.”

Moore’s publicist and representatives from Human Rights Watch did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

Marc Boman, one of Kruzan’s pro bono attorneys, said he’s been swamped with recent media requests but couldn’t speak of his plans.

But Deanne said she hopes all the attention leads to a change in the law or at least a chance for Kruzan’s parole.

“We all know she did the crime but she deserves a second chance,” Deanne said. “She’s so ambitious that it makes me work even harder for her.”

Kruzan continues to study and take classes from prison, her friend said. The 2006 video ends with a promise from her, offered with just the slightest hopeful smile.

“I’m very determined to show that no matter what you have done, or where you’ve come from, or what you experienced in life,” Kruzan said, “it’s up to you to change.”

I thought it was odd that the judge in this case said she lacked “moral scruples” and that her crime was “well thought out”, so I did some searching. Well according to the prosecuting att. she was no longer working for GG when she killed him. She supposidly went to work for his rival. She supposidly made provisions to meet with GG for a date. On this “date” she put a gun to his neck and killed him. Taking with her $1500.00 and his Jaguar. I DON’T KNOW IF THIS IS COMPLETELY TRUE AND I DO BELIEVE SHE SHOULD BE FREED AT SOME POINT. BUT SOME PPL WERE WONDERING HOW SHE KILLED HIM AND THERE IT IS. SHE SHOT HIM. YOU CAN GOOGLE “HOW SARAH KRUZAN KILLED HER PIMP” AND YOU’LL FIND A BUNCH OF LINKS.

Ihave just recieved this information, and well knowing how the system works against so many (of Us) that had no stable foundation is simply tossed into the tanks of hell because we had found ourselves in the wrong situations simply looking for any form of stability, security, love, attention, * a purpose*. And once we are put before a system that gives not one ounce of consideration to a simple fact that (We ALL Make Mistakes and I don’t give a damb WHO YOU are, yet those with money and solid Family back ground can get away with anything with a simple slap on the hand and maybe a few hours of community service. OMG the things I’ve learned!!!

I just want to say to Sarah, Hunny, stay strong, and I know You will because God intended You to be, and there is something going on, yes, and with that, a reason. Whew!!

I have You’re address, and I’m going to make it my time to write to you and let You know that I support you in your existence, I relate to you’re situation, and I know what its like to have gone through the things that are so similar, and the pain, anger, frustration, hate, guilt and shame that you are living with. The system has no desire to take the time to be rational, (it’s no skin off any of their asses what happens to people like us, that have made mistakes, been placed in a situation where we are fully able to admit to our mistakes in a responsible way, and learn from that, and…. with every part of us, TRY to move on…

Society may have thrown you away, but those of us in this society have not forgotten about you, nor are going to give up the fact and fight that once placed in a (((Correctional Facility))) and let me reemphasize here, ((correctional)) that we are given time…. to learn from being cought, and dealing with the time to correct it, then…. granted a chance to become a better part of society. Perhaps? a better participint then most of Those You had to take stand in front of in the get go!!!

I may be out here, yet still doing time mind You even though I’m considered (Free), but I know how hard I’m trying to prove that I have learned, and Im better then all that now, and trying to move on, yet nearly daily feeling the sting of making a bad move.

Yes, something has to change!!! It’s more then the small box others see you in, when its actually They that are in the small box!

What Sara did is called “survival” only in real life, not like tv. She’s been brutally victimized for 3 horrible years. so she makes a decision: will I survive or will i give up my life to this creep? her decision was entirely justified. she could not have done anything else. she has done nothing wrong. she deserves no punishment at all. Also she is a really wonderful human.

    Good evening,

After watching Sarah Kruzan’s brief video, my heart is sadden. True enough, what she did was wrong terrible wrong and not excusable by any means. But she to, as anyone other individual, who has done wrong, deserve the right to earn a chance for redemption. We are not perfect and don’t always make the best decision. Past history has proven that time and time again. So ask the question, that I pose, what is the Judiciary System really trying show or tell us? For when we take the oath, and promise and swear to tell the truth SO HELP ME GOD, my faith or entire existent is not left in God’s hands, but by those who are just as imperfect as the one being judge. Kinda contradictory and hypocritical if you ask my opinion, and I understand that’s all it is, but I also understand the purpose of the system. And knowing that it won’t ever change, but there is still hope.

And in saying this here is a list of how the imperfect, one can be, and still make a difference, so there is no excuse, why Sarah Kruzan shouldn’t be given a second chance.
The next time you feel like God can’t use you, just remember . . .

    NOAH was a drunk….
    ABRAHAM was too old…
    ISAAC was a daydreamer…..
    JACOB was a liar…
    JOSEPH was abused…
    MOSES had a stuttering problem…
    GIDEON was afraid…
SAMPSON had long hair, and was a womanizer!
    RAHAB was a prostitute!
JEREMIAH and TIMOTHY were too young…
DAVID had an affair and was a murderer…
    ELIJAH was suicidal…
    ISAIAH preached naked…
    JONAH ran from God…
    NAOMI was a widow…
    JOB went bankrupt…
    JOHN the Baptist ate bugs….
    PETER denied Christ…
The Disciples fell asleep while praying…
    MARTHA worried about everything…
MARY MAGDALENE was, well, you know …
The SAMARITAN WOMAN was divorced….more than once!!
    ZACCHEUS was too small…
    PAUL was too religious….
    TIMOTHY had an ulcer…. AND
    LAZARUS WAS DEAD!!!!

    . . . no more excuses now . . . SO PLEASE ME GOD . . . HELP SARAH KRUZAN.

And to you Sarah, don’t give on yourself. Keep praying about it, and ask The Almighty Father, the only one, who has the right to judge. You can make a difference. I mean you’re already have. I will continue to keep you in my prayers and pray for the best for you. Keep your head up.

    Sincerely.
    T~Sam

Let’s see – the manson family is still celebrated in media and gets regular “parole” hearings and yet Sarah has no “morals or scruples” – Check the dictionary for “travesty of Justice”! This case is at the top of the list! Time served is more than sufficient for Her courageously escaping the Cycle of Human Predation!

i start my homework tonight. My letter to Govenor Swartznegor will be sent in the A.M.
What was that judges reason for such HARSHNESS?
Was there a jury of her peers? I know first hand of a man who committed a brutal murder..ran for a year and was sentanced to 12 years, out in 7 to become a worthless junkie. WHY? Our jugistial system really has to be reanalized and better constructed.. Sorry for your hardships Sarah.. I’m pulling for you..

Let’s Make April Sara Kruzan Month!

I first want to start by saying this is a blueprint/plan to bring attention to Sara Kruzan’s case. I want to thank all those who have been involved in with Sara Kruzan’s case from the beginning and those like me who discovered the Youtube video through another FB friend late last year. Big Shout-outs 2 Angie, Anthony, and Sara’s sister Tia, u guys & gals hve worked ur tails off. THANK-YOU! Now the plan/blueprint.

    1) We all know California is in a budget criss, so let’s help them out and bring awareness to Ms. Kruzan all at the same time. I’m proposing we send $0.16 or $1.16 to the state of California and we include with that money a greeting card stating why we r doing this. The simple answer is we want the Governor of California, Mr. Schwarzenegger to pardon Sara Kruzan. U can go into detail if u want, it doesn’t really matter, what does matter is u send the greeting card in the same envelope as the money and explain in some fashion that ur doing this for Sara Kruzan. The $0.16 or $1.16 is also somewhat important because 16 represents the number of years Sara Kruzan has spent in jail. So make sure it’s $0.16 or $1.16 lol! This could also get some well needed media attention. It ’s my belief that when the American people discover this case they will stand with Sara Kruzan.

    2) State Senator Yee of San Francisco has supported Sara Kruzan from the beginning. We should thank him 4 that stance. I’m proposing we send him a thank-you post card for his involvement in the Sara Kruzan case. I’ll get his address and blast it up soon. We need 2 make sure that we thank those who r fighting in the state of California 4 Sara Kruzan and I thought this would be a wonderful way of doing just that.

    3) lastly, this is optional, I’m going to write President Obama about Sara Kruzan’s case. some people don’t like writing letters, that’s fine just pick up another greeting card and tell why u support Sara Kruzan and ask for a pardon. I’m going to write a letter in which I’ll tie in the civil war with Sara Kruzan and seek to explain what I believe President Lincoln would do in this circumstance. I’ll do my research folks lol!

P.S. This $0.16 or $1.16 and greeting card campaign should begin in April and last all month long. I picked April so as not to interfere with the health-care bill which i think will be done sometime in March. We also need time to mobilize r supporters and tell them the plan. So we will have all of March to work out the details, add new ideas and improve existing ideas.

P.P.S. We can’t do this alone we need to light up the social networking sites. We need as many people as humanly possible participating in this project. Use Twitter, Fackbook, MySpace, etc. Use all those FB friends and MySpace friends. Tell folks off line as well.

P.P.P.S. Let’s make this happen ladies and gentlemen! Stop the injustice; FREE SARA KRUZAN!

    Thank-You

Crap. Absolute crap. This woman deserves to be slammed in jail.
Did you listen to her at all? She did NOT bear ANY responsibilities for her actions! This guy groomed her for a life of prostitution, had sex with her, pushed her to the wall……total BS.
She was vulnerable for sure. But couldn’t she have told someone? Parents? Sibling? Relatives?
And what about the money she made for herself? The other benefits she got for working the streets?
Her pimp is a scumbag no doubt. She is the second scumbag.
Shooting your pimp is not the way to handle pimps.

I feel all of you’ll on what has happen but no-one deserves what she got she was a child if killing was the only way out then that’s was the road that she took. And to Jhon3232 i understand how you feel but at the same time she could have told the cops what was going on and yes he would have went to jail and got out on a bond or whatever the case maybe, but whenever he got released from jail that would have been her body found dead and not his do you feel where I am coming from. Not saying what she done was right but once again who are we to judge because at the end of the day neither one of us have a heaven or hell to put a person in. so do not cast that stone look at your life before you try to correct someone else or judge him or her.

I believe Sarah Kruzan committed more a just act than an unjust act given her situation. She might have saved your child or mine and she is given life without parole + 4. Where is the justice in givng a child a sentece that is so absurd when it’s obvious she only did what she did to save her own life?

I’m sorry to come to this late and having done some research into the situation I’m thinking many of you don’t have a full view of what really happened. This was not a case of the pimp was abusing her and she killed him in self defense. She, in fact, was no longer working for him. Now while I don’t agree with her sentence, it is a bit excessive for a child with her background, she does not need to be let off scot free. What she did was premeditated murder with extenuating circumstances. She committed murder in the commission of a felony. Normally that is a capital offense that can be punishable by death in some states. However, the mitigating circumstances and her background do warrant some leniency.

    This story is a HOAX!!
I’ve been researching the info since watching the vid over 2 yrs ago and keep finding NOTHING but this vid, which was made in ‘04 by the way…
    - No court records.
    - No case records.
    - No funeral or death certificate for ”G.G. the pimp a.k.a. Mr Howard”
    - NOTHING.

Ok I have read a great deal on this case and here is the problem. She was living with another person at the time of the crime, met with the pimp to have a “session”, agreed to an overnight, killed him by shooting him in the neck, stole $1500 and his car. So, the whole “escaping abuse” story doesn’t jive– she wasn’t even living with him at the time, she was living with another drug dealing lowlife.

Girls like Sara are vulnerable to pimps, who know the girls are needy, seeking love and stability. So they offer a sense of love from a “father” or a “husband,” which was phase one of G.G.’s plan. http://broadblogs.com/

Pimps sell their girls to other pimps they don’t just let them walk away to make money for someone else. So why isn’t this being brought up in her case???? Sara was with out a doubt being traffic.
