I Get It From My Mama
After watching the ladies of Grey Gardens on HBO and watching the original documentary, I got to thinking about mother/daughter relationships and how much our mothers influence our romantic choices and behavior in relationships. Your mother is your first role model for womanhood and how she carries herself and how she interacts with men have an impact on you, but how exactly?
On Keyshia Cole’s reality show, there was an episode where Keyshia, her mother and her sister were telling their family therapist that they suffer from a family curse when it comes to men. They were very sincere with their insistence about this family curse. For them, it was a fact as solid as the sun rising everyday.

SWM Looking for Love: “I like women who go to the gym, take pride in their appearance, and enjoy good company.” “If you’re looking for a well-dressed, clean-cut man, than I’m your guy.”
This is an ad by Inmate #786562 (number has been changed to protect the inmate–yeah.) In his quest for Ms. Right he failed to include in his ad that he’s serving a life sentence for murder…yes, MURDER! Who in the hell left the gate open?

We were a couple. We lived together. We broke up. We lived together for 30 days AFTER we broke up. Disaster. I needed time to look for a new place and get some money together, so I couldn’t leave right away. Suffice to say, that was the worst living situation I have ever endured. In an effort to protect the identity of the not so innocent, I’ll call this dude ummm…Alf.
So, Alf and I were beefing hard. This was not an amicable split by any means. At first I tried to be the bigger person and all that, but my efforts were undermined at every turn. Alf would do obnoxious little things to get under my skin. For example, normally we ate dinner together, but for the first week or so after we broke up things were just weird and unsettled and we had kind of stayed out of each other’s way. One night, I came home to the smell of cooking and I actually smiled, which was something I hadn’t done in a while.

I went through a bad boy phase in high school. I’m not talking about boys who skipped math class either. I’m talking about gang bangers, street pharmacists and a couple dudes who were a tad too old to be dealing with me. My attraction to them was probably mostly due to the whole opposites thing. I was an ardent good girl. I had good grades, rarely broke curfew and I was pure as the driven snow. The bad boy phase didn’t last too long and there were regular boys sprinkled in there too, so I got my head straight relatively quickly with no long term consequences on my end.
Besides the notion that opposites attract, the thing that those guys had was one of the few things you can not teach: swagger. Not Soulja Boy swagger, but Teddy Pendergrass swagger when he said “Turn ‘em off!” in that one old school jam or Stinger Bell swagger in pretty much every one of his scenes in The Wire. Mmmhmm. There is something very appealing about a man whose actions seem to reflect his intentions/desires. In my opinion, confidence is right up there with smile as far as the sexiest thing about a man.

I’ve been following the alledged “Craig’s List Killer” case and yesterday his fiance went to see him in jail and has vowed to stand by him through this ordeal. Although she claims that he wouldn’t hurt a fly, there are obviously some things about this man that either she failed to notice or disregarded–which leads me to my question–how well do you really know your man?
